Artistic Origami

"Modern origami is a unique sculptural art. Each origami design must be individually folded; there is no mass-production process. My designs are folded from selected papers, some of which I have made myself, each paper chosen to complement the design and composition." said Robert J. Lang, the artist of origami. Origami (折り紙 or 折紙 origami "paper folding") is the art of paper folding. The goal of this art is to create a given result using geometric folds and crease patterns. The word literally means "paper folding" in Japanese and refers to all types of paper folding, even those of non-Japanese origin.

Origami only uses a small number of different folds, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper, whose sides may be different colors, and usually proceed without cutting the paper. Contrary to most popular belief, traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603-1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper during the creation of the design (Kirigami 切り紙) or starting with a rectangular, circular, or other non-square sheets of paper. It's also possible to create folds from triangular paper. [wikipedia]

About the artist:
Robert J. Lang has been an avid student of origami for over thirty years and is now recognized as one of the world’s leading masters of the art, with over 400 designs catalogued and diagrammed. He is noted for designs of great detail and realism, and includes in his repertoire some of the most complex origami designs ever created. His work combines aspects of the Western school of mathematical origami design with the Eastern emphasis upon line and form to yield models that are at once distinctive, elegant, and challenging to fold. They have been shown in exhibitions in Paris, New York, Boston, San Diego, and Tokyo, among others. [more]
